Music Curriculum and Standards

Below are the Music standards for each grade on Rhythmic Literacy (Fall Term), Melodic Literacy (Winter Term), and Expressive Elements (Spring Term)


Our grading System is on a 1-4 scale.  Here are the guidelines to Salem-Keizer Progress Reports

4:  Exceeds Proficiency-Student performs beyond grade level standard
3:  Proficient- Student demonstrates proficiency within the standard
2:  Developing Proficiency- Student is making progress toward the standard
1:  Limited Proficiency- Student shows little or no progress toward the standard



Music Standards: Fall Term
Rhythmic Literacy: Common Formative Assessment Standards
Salem-Keizer Elementary Music Essential Learning Skills
Kindergarten
1. Respond with a prescribed gesture or movement to a steady beat at various tempos from musical and non-musical sources.
2. Perform a steady beat on instruments or body while singing.
​3. Create movements that demonstrate an awareness of the beat of a song.

​
First Grade
1. Given two written rhythms, select the one performed.
​2. Read and perform rhythms using note and rest values listed above.
3. Demonstrate an understanding of beat one as a strong beat.
4. Create 2-, 3- and 4-beat rhythms using note and rest values listed above.
​
​Second Grade
1. Given three written rhythms, select the one performed.
2. Read and perform rhythms using note and rest values listed above.
3. Create 2-, 3- and 4-beat rhythms using note and rest values listed above.



Third Grade
1. Given four written rhythms, select the one performed.
2. Label measures in 2/4 3/4 and 4/4 time with appropriate “number counting”.
3. Read and perform rhythms using note and rest values listed above.
4. Create 2-, 3- and 4-beat patterns incorporating note and rest values listed above.​

​Fourth Grade
1. Given four written rhythms, select the one performed.
2. Label a rhythm with accurate subdivision.
3. Read and perform rhythms using note and rest values listed above. 
​4. Create multi-measure rhythms in 2/4, 3/4 and 4/4 that incorporate note and rest values listed above.
​

Fifth Grade
​1. Given four written rhythms, select the one performed.
2. Label a rhythm with accurate subdivision.
3. Read and perform rhythms using note and rest values listed above. 
4. Create multi-measure rhythms in 2/4, 3/4 and 4/4 that incorporate note and rest values listed above.
Music Standards: Winter Term
Melodic Literacy: Common Formative Assessment Standards
​Salem-Keizer Elementary Music Essential Learning Skills
Kindergarten
1. Identify high and low voice in a poem or chant.
2. Identify high and low sounds in performances of music  
3. Perform a melodic contour line, as expressed in imitation notation.
4. Create and notate in imitation notation (individually or in small groups) a melodic contour line.
​
First Grade
1. Identify steps and skips in written and aural examples.
2. Perform (individually or in small group; vocal or instrumental) a mi-so-la pattern notated on the staff.
​3. Sing back on solfege a mi-so-la pattern performed on neutral syllables.
4. Create and notate on the staff (individually or in small groups) a 4-beat mi-so-la motif.
​

​Second Grade

1. Identify steps, skips, and leaps in written and aural examples.
2. Perform (individually or small group; vocal or instrumental) a do-re-mi-so-la pattern notated on the staff.
3. Sing back on solfege a
do-re-mi-so-la pattern performed on neutral syllables.
4. Create and notate on the staff (individually or in small groups) a 4- or 8-beat
do-re-mi-so-la phrase.

Third Grade
1. Identify pitches on the treble clef.
2. Perform (individually or small group; vocal or instrumental) a do-based or la-based pentatonic melody notated on the staff.
3. Sing a pentatonic phrase from provided hand signs.
4. Create and notate on the staff (individually or in small groups) an 8-beat phrase using la and so.

​Fourth Grade
1. Identify pitches on the treble clef, up to one ledger line in each direction.
2. Perform (individually or small group; vocal or instrumental) songs incorporating fa, notated on the staff or in a score.
3. Sing a phrase featuring fa from provided hand signs. 
4. Create and notate (individually or in small groups) an 8-16 beat melody incorporating fa. 

Fifth Grade
1. Identify grand staff, bass clef, treble clef, and middle c.
2. Perform (individually or small group; vocal or instrumental) songs incorporating ti, notated on the staff or in a score.
3. Sing major and minor phrases from provided hand signs.
4. Create and notate (individually or in small groups) an 8-16 beat melody incorporating low sol, low la, and low ti. 
Music Standards: Spring Term
Expressive Elements: Common Formative Assessment Standards
Salem-Keizer Elementary Music Essential Learning Skills
Kindergarten
1. Respond to various timbres and forms of given musical selections.
2. Perform contrasting dynamics on a variety of classroom instruments.
3. Create fast and slow movements to reflect the tempos in given musical selections.​

​
First Grade
1. Respond to piano/forte and allegro/lento elements, using the corresponding vocabulary.
2. Perform in question/answer or call/response form using instruments and/or voice.
3. Create visual representations of various elements of expression (listening maps, artwork representing lento/allegro, etc.).​

​Second Grade

1. Respond to various dynamics and tempo using corresponding vocabulary and symbols.
2. Perform in ABA form. Differentiate sections through movement, instrumentation, or other mode of expression.
3. Create a graphic organizer of the orchestral families.


Third Grade
1. Identify expressive elements in recordings of choirs and orchestras.
2. Perform in rondo form. Differentiate sections through movement, instrumentation, or other mode of expression.
3. Create a graphic organizer listing common characteristics of classical, contemporary, jazz and folk styles.​

​Fourth Grade
1. Describe expressive elements in recordings of bands and symphony orchestras.
2. Perform pieces in major and minor tonalities. Describe differences in the moods they evoke.
​3. Individually or in small groups, compose 1st and 2nd endings to a short piece.

Fifth Grade
​1. Using recordings of small ensembles, describe the expressive elements a composer employs to convey musical ideas.
2. Perform music that incorporates the formal elements of D.C. al Fine, D.S. al Fine, and coda.
3. Compose a piece (individually or in groups) for which you determine instrumentation, form, and expressive elements.​
